All you re doing with a pickup ring is adding more parts that could fail.

Hello all the mounting ring around my neck pickup broke.
I just changed the black plastic pickup rings on my ps 4 to chrome plated metal rings.
It has a cut on each side of the pick which lets it flex up and down.
I use the orange medium.
The stiffer ones fly off when i pick up on the strings.
A pickup ring achieves these things but so does a proper direct mount.

To be sure that is why guitar manufacturers have and continue to produce pickup rings from those materials with great success.
But covers of all materials keep the pickup a touch further away from the strings and that makes a difference in tone and output if you keep your pickups close to the strings like most people do.
Plastic rings while traditional and easy to produce have offered stability and consistency to guitar makers for many years.
I prefer plastic slick pick.
